Activities & Sports

Sports

Lappeenranta offers a ton of opportunities for an active lifestyle, no matter what the weather. There are some great gyms, a sports complex, public swimming pools, free tennis courts, and various facilities in the university. And of course, plenty of walking trails in the woods, where you can jog in absolute peace!

  • Badminton: University club called SaLUT badminton club where everyone is welcome, no matter what your skill level. Just bring your own racket!
  • Swimming: Swimming pool near the city center. Prices differ for adults and university students. It is also possible to swim in Lake Saimaa – although it’s a bit cold, it’s very safe as long as you do know swimming. Popular spots include Sammonlahti and Myllysaari beaches.
  • Bowling Alley: Same place as the swimming pool in the city center.
  • Huhtiniemi Sports Center has very extensive facilities for most sports. Plus the area is great for running!
  • The city also has a free open air tennis court, which turns into an ice skating rink in the winter.
  • Skiing tracks are made in various parts of the city in winter. The lake, which freezes solid, is great for cross-country skiing, ice fishing, or just walking over!
  • SaiPa is the local and highly popular ice hockey team. You should definitely go watch a match (or two)!

If you know of another sports activity/club that you’re interested in, let me know, and I’ll include it here!

Movies

Lappeenranta now has a great multi-screen theater called Finnkino in the IsoKristiina mall. Prices are reasonable, and students discounts are available.

Museums

The history museum and the art museum, both located in the fortress area, are free on the first Friday of every month (except in summer).

Saimaa Cruise and Water Activities

In the short but beautiful summer, Lake Saimaa fills up with boats of all kinds. You can go kayaking with the local outdoors club or hire a boat at the harbor for the day.

Lake cruises are a really nice way of exploring Lake Saimaa without worrying about handling a boat. The boat goes through “locks” to cope with differences in lake’s topology. The cruises stop in September, so check the timetable before you go. I recommend the evening cruise, which is longer and nicer. Don’t forget to dress warm!
